Halloween decorations come down, the clocks change, and suddenly Christmas seems to be everywhere. Somewhere in between, November can get a little lost. But maybe November deserves more credit.

Thanksgiving naturally makes us think about the big things we're grateful for. But sometimes it's the little things that make an ordinary day special - a good cup of coffee, a conversation with a neighbor, hearing from an old friend, laughing over dinner, or simply having nowhere you need to rush off to.

Maybe that's November's charm. It quietly gives us a few weeks to appreciate what's right in front of us. So before the holiday rush takes over, give November its moment. Slow down. Look around. And enjoy the little things.

Is Your Home Ready for Winter?

Cold Weather Tips to Help Avoid Winter Problems

A little preparation now can help prevent expensive repairs when the temperatures drop.

• Protect Your Pipes: Insulate pipes in unheated areas and know where your main water shut-off valve is located. During extreme cold, keep your heat at a safe temperature even when you're away.
• Disconnect Outdoor Hoses: Remove garden hoses, drain outdoor faucets and shut off the interior water supply to outside spigots if your home has a separate shut-off.
• Clean Your Gutters: Clear out leaves and debris so melting snow and rain can drain properly. Clogged gutters can contribute to ice buildup and water damage.
• Have Your Heating System Checked: A yearly service can help your heating system run efficiently and may catch a problem before you find yourself without heat on a freezing night.
• Test Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Detectors: Replace batteries if needed and make sure detectors are working properly, especially as heating systems and fireplaces get more use.
• Prepare for Snow & Ice: Make sure your snow shovel, ice melt and other winter supplies are ready before the first storm arrives.

A Little Something for Your Thanksgiving Table

Thanksgiving is all about gathering around the table and enjoying some of our favorite foods. Here are some easy recipes you might want to add to your Thanksgiving menu this year!

Maple Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Bacon & Pecans

Ingredients:
1 ½ lbs. Brussels sprouts, trimmed & halved
4 slices bacon, cooked & crumbled
2 tbsp. olive oil
2 tbsp. maple syrup
½ cup chopped pecans
Salt & pepper to taste

Directions:
Preheat oven to 400°F. Toss Brussels sprouts with olive oil, maple syrup, salt and pepper. Spread on a baking sheet and roast for 25–30 minutes, stirring halfway through. Toss with the cooked bacon and pecans before serving.

Cheesy Garlic Mashed Potatoes

Ingredients:
3 lbs. Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled & quartered
4 tbsp. butter
½ cup warm milk
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
Salt & pepper to taste

Directions:
Boil potatoes in salted water until tender, about 15–20 minutes. Drain well. Melt butter in a small pan and sauté garlic for about 1 minute. Add butter and garlic to the potatoes along with warm milk. Mash until creamy, then stir in cheddar cheese. Season with salt and pepper.

You don't have to completely redecorate to give your home a warm, welcoming fall feel. A few simple seasonal touches can make a big difference.

Start at the Front Door

• Add a fall wreath to your front door.
• Place mums or other seasonal plants near the entrance.
• Group a few pumpkins or gourds on the steps or porch.
• Add lanterns for a warm glow as the days get shorter.
• Don't forget the basics – sweep the walkway, clear away leaves and replace a tired-looking doormat.

Make It Cozy Inside

• Add a soft throw and a few pillows in warm fall colors.
• Bring in natural touches such as branches, dried flowers, pinecones or small pumpkins.
• Use table lamps and softer lighting instead of relying only on bright overhead lights.
• A fall-scented candle can make a room instantly feel more inviting.
• Keep it simple. A few well-placed seasonal touches can often have more impact than filling every room with decorations.

A little fall warmth can make your home feel especially welcoming – both to you and everyone who comes through the door!

Wantagh's schools have long been an important part of the community. From the elementary years through high school graduation, students have opportunities to learn, grow, participate in activities and become part of their school community.

For the 2026–2027 school year, the first day of classes for Wantagh public school students is Wednesday, September 2.

Here are a few interesting facts about the Wantagh schools serving our neighborhood.

Wantagh School District 23

Forest Lake Elementary School

Forest Lake gives Wantagh's youngest students, including many children from the Flower Section, their start in the district. Along with its core academic program, students have opportunities to participate in art, music, physical education and activities designed to encourage creativity, learning and school involvement.

• Grades: UPK–5
• One of three elementary schools in the Wantagh School District
• Fifth Graders Created a Lasting Legacy: Every fifth grader helped paint a new mural in the school's lobby, featuring the Statue of Liberty's torch and the American flag, which will remain as a lasting legacy of the Class of 2026
• Olympic-Themed STEAM Night Inspired Young Learners: Students and their families explored hands-on science, technology, engineering, art, and math activities inspired by the Winter Olympics

Wantagh Middle School

Wantagh Middle School brings together students from the district's elementary schools. In addition to academics, students can explore new interests through electives, athletics, music, performing arts, clubs and extracurricular activities.

• Grades: 6–8
• Offers electives and activities that have included robotics, cooking and fitness
• Students can participate in music, theater, clubs and athletics
• Qualifying middle-school athletes may have opportunities to participate at the high-school level through the Athletic Placement Process
• Fundraiser for Clean Water: Seventh graders organized a fundraiser that raised over $2,000 to help provide clean drinking water to communities in need around the world after reading A Long Walk to Water
• Recognized Again as a "School to Watch": Re-designated as a NYS and National Schools to Watch School, recognizing its continued excellence in academics, leadership, and student support

Wantagh High School

Wantagh High School offers advanced academics, athletics, performing arts, clubs, community service, and leadership programs that give students many different ways to find their interests and become involved.

• Grades: 9–12
• Participates in the prestigious AP Capstone program
• Students Earned Thousands in Scholarships: During the annual Senior Awards Ceremony, students received scholarships and awards in more than 60 different categories
• Students can work toward the New York State Seal of Biliteracy
• Nassau County Games for the Physically Challenged: More than 60 Wantagh students volunteered as peer buddies and helpers, supporting athletes at this inspiring annual event that promotes inclusion, teamwork, and community service

REMEMBER OUR TEACHERS!

As another school year begins, let's remember the teachers who work hard every day to educate, encourage and support our children. A simple "thank you" can go a long way in letting them know their efforts are appreciated.

• Make sure children arrive at school prepared with the supplies they need.
• Take an interest in homework, projects and upcoming tests.
• Help children develop good study habits and routines at home.
• Stay involved and communicate with teachers when needed.
• When possible, volunteer or lend a hand with school and classroom activities.
• And most importantly, remind children that teachers and parents are working together to help them succeed.

SCHOOL'S OPEN — DRIVE WITH CARE!

With students heading back to school, it's a good time for all of us to brush up on New York's school bus safety rules. Knowing what those flashing lights mean can help keep our children safe — and help drivers avoid a costly ticket.

When you see a school bus...

• Flashing Yellow Lights — SLOW DOWN! The bus is preparing to stop to pick up or drop off students. Reduce your speed and be prepared to stop.
• Flashing Red Lights — STOP! You must come to a complete stop at least 20 feet from the bus.
• BOTH DIRECTIONS MUST STOP! Traffic approaching the bus from either direction must stop when its red lights are flashing.
• YES, EVEN ON A DIVIDED HIGHWAY! In New York, you must stop for a school bus with flashing red lights even when the bus is on the opposite side of a divided or multi-lane highway.
• DON'T FORGET THE SMALL BUSES! A smaller vehicle can also be equipped and operated as a school bus. Don't assume the rule only applies to the traditional large yellow bus. Watch for the SCHOOL BUS markings and flashing red lights.
• WAIT UNTIL IT'S SAFE TO GO! Remain stopped until the bus begins moving again or you are directed to proceed by the bus driver or a police officer. Always look carefully for children before moving.

Passing a stopped school bus can be costly...

Passing a school bus with its red lights flashing is a serious New York traffic violation.

• A first conviction can mean a $250–$400 fine and possible jail time.
• As of February 16, 2026, illegally passing a stopped school bus carries 8 points on your driver's license.
• School bus stop-arm cameras may also capture vehicles that illegally pass.
• Camera violations begin at $250 for a first violation and increase for repeat violations.

One Easy Rule to Remember:

YELLOW = SLOW DOWN & PREPARE TO STOP

RED = STOP! CHILDREN MAY BE CROSSING

A few extra minutes of patience can prevent a ticket — and, much more importantly, help keep our neighborhood children safe.

Thinking About Selling? Start Preparing Now

If selling your home may be in your future — whether this fall, next spring or even next year — now is a great time to start looking at your home through a buyer's eyes.

• Clear out closets, basements and garages a little at a time.
• Take care of those small repairs you've been putting off.
• Freshen up your home's entrance and curb appeal.
• Start making a list of improvements you've made over the years.

You don't have to wait until you're ready to put up a For Sale sign to start getting prepared. A little work now can make the selling process much easier later.

GET YOUR HOME READY FOR COLDER WEATHER

Give Your Heating System a Head Start

Don't wait for the first cold morning to discover a problem. Early fall is a good time to have your heating system checked, replace or clean filters, and make sure thermostats are working properly.

While you're at it, take a quick walk around your home and check gutters, outdoor faucets, weather stripping and windows. A little preventive maintenance now can help avoid bigger — and more expensive — problems this winter.
